Our Story
At Kloof Cottage we welcome children from ages 4 who cannot fit into the mainstream arena. We think wider than curriculum and focus on each child’s abilities and set of skills. Through play we learn life skills, socialization skills, coping skills and start bridging the ‘kloof’, a barrier for children with specific difficulties. The philosophy of our ELS program and individualised, systematic and developmental learning, shaped the details of the programme. Our philosophy of cognitive, contextual learning permeates through the programme, ensuring meaningful engagements with the materials. We place realistic demands on our children and set no limits on their unique learning needs.
Metanoia Kloof Cottage was established in 2018 as an ELS centre and in 2019 we opened our first ECD classroom (ages 4-6). We endeavour to register with the Department of education by 2020 which will enable us to enrol our first Foundations phase group.
Metanoia Kloof Cottage is owned by a Mommy of two special needs boys, who saw a need for quality education even though her boys had very limited verbal and receptive skills. Throughout her journey from school to school, she felt that her boy’s abilities were being underestimated, and that learning should not be limited because of specific barriers… it need only be adapted. This prompted her to search beyond the Eastern Cape where she met Dr Lyn Thijsse and invested in the ELS therapy program which had much success with her boys and thereafter with other children that Kloof opened their doors to. Such was the success of the ELS therapy program that she invested in the Metanoia school program and Port Elizabeth now proudly boasts its first Metanoia school, situated in Walmer, run by a dedicated and passionate team.
